You stood in front of the doors, and looked discreetly at the Second Imperial Prince. It was already afternoon and you came to call him for dinner. However, you weren't able to walk any further and say anymore because it would disturb him.
He sat on a bench, his back to you, as he feed the pigeons. His moves were slow, yet fluid and hypnotic. And those birds around him... You didn't like pigeons, but you had to admit that, especially when the sun was shining so brightly, the whole scenery was breathtaking.
You looked away for a second and cleared your throat.
"Prince," you called after you took a step closer. He turned his face to you. You blushed at once and bowed. "D-dinner is ready". He nodded and stood up. The pigeons flew away; only some of them stayed to eat the leftovers.
"What's for dinner?" he asked as he walked by.
"Smoke squid, my Prince," you bowed again. It was only a glance, but you saw a tiny smile playing on his lips. You knew it was his favourite dish, and that's why you insisted on preparing it for today.
He was about to enter the palace when he turned around to look at you. You looked away, blushing.
"Thank you," you heard. Then the door was shut.
~
In the evening, you fell on the bed, tired and without any power to stand up and wash yourself. Your eyes were smarting and your hands were bloated. You wanted to sleep.
But one thought gave you some energy: he thanked you. He looked exactly into your eyes and said those two words.
Silence.
Suddenly you hid your face in a pillow and screamed, kicking like a child--the reason why you didn't hear a knock.
"(Name)-san, is everything alright?"
You tailed off. After realizing whose voice it was, you quickly stood up and bowed.
"P-Prince! I didn't expect you here!" you said quietly. He closed the door behind him and sighed. It seemed that he wasn't convinced of this visit's goal. Or, rather, of what he should say. He rubbed the back of his head.
"(Name)-san, I would like to talk with you honestly."
You heart started to beat so fast you felt pain in your chest. You gulped, waiting for the next words.
"Yes, my Prince?" You quickly offered him a chair, "Please, sit down."
"I've been watching you for a long time," he started, blushing slightly. You couldn't believe it. But it was too early for you to be happy or sad, so you kept on waiting. "I think that I understand your feelings towards me. If I'm wrong, tell me now. You love me, don't you? (Name)-san?"
You had to sit on the bed. You were trembling, unable to say anything. A few seconds passed and Koumei sat next to you. He covered your hand with his own.
You glanced at him and nodded, "Yes, m-my Prince..."
He became sad. After closing the eyes, he said: "I'm sorry for what I'm going to say, but it's impossible for us to be together. I'm an Imperial Prince. You...you are a simple maid."
"I understand that," you whispered, swallowing your tears and disappointment. But one part of you expected this. And it hurt the most.
"If you were a princess, or if I were a simple citizen, there's a big possibility that I would love you."
You looked at him with disbelief in your eyes. He caught your eye and blushed, rubbing his head back again.
"So, I mean...The only thing I can do for you--for me--! We can..."
He sighed and shook his head.
"Prince..."
He squeezed your hand and looked into your eyes. You had been unprepared for what he did. In a second you felt his soft lips on your own. You felt his breath on your neck, his hand on your back. You shivered and placed your hand on his cheek. His kisses were incredibly passionate and sweet.
When you parted, he whispered: ""But no one has to know that we are lovers, (Name)."
You blushed, your eyes sparkling with excitement and happiness. He chuckled and kissed your eyelid. "Will you be my lover? Will you be only mine?"
You smiled and stuttered out:
"Koumei, my Prince, I"
